The Happiness Advantage: Linking Positive Brains to Performance

Shawn Achor
Most companies and schools follow this formula: if you work harder, you will be more successful, and then you will be happy. This formula is scientifically backward. A decade of research shows that training your brain to be positive at work first actually fuels greater success second. In fact, 75% of our job success is predicted not by intelligence, but by your optimism, social support network and the ability to manage energy and stress in a positive way.

By researching top performers at Harvard, the world’s largest banks, and Fortune 500 companies, Shawn discovered patterns which create a happiness advantage for positive outliers—the highest performers at the company. Based on his book, The Happiness Advantage, Shawn explains what positive psychology is, how much we can change, and practical applications for reaping the Happiness Advantage in the midst of change and challenge.

Lisa Shalett

Amid a bear market that has endured for over a year and a half now, Morgan Stanley Wealth Management’s Global Investment Committee(GIC) asserts that both economic and market betas are higher than believed and continues to contend that earnings risk for the S&P 500 under a soft landing and/or recession scenario is not properly priced—representing a 10% to 20% downside to profit forecasts. In this mainstage session, Wealth Management CIO Lisa Shalett will provide an overview of the GIC’s latest thinking and offer recommendations for how to manage portfolios amid the current environment.

Dr. Kim Henderson
Bringing your best self to work is the new mantra in the post-pandemic era.  And becoming your best self requires each one of us to intentionally commit to the process every day.  It is not one and done.  And since many of you flew in to attend APIC, think of this journey to becoming your best you as putting on your oxygen mask before helping others because you must take care of yourself first in order to deliver your best to family, clients and colleagues.

Over two days, a panel of Morgan Stanley leaders from Family Office Resources will share health and well-being best practices. You will gain a deeper understanding of the impact of water, nutrition, exercise, sleep, and stress management on physical and mental health and discover how philanthropy advances prevention, treatment, and much needed cures.

Join a fireside chat with David Bokman and Dr. Kim Henderson to discuss the best way to rehydrate and re-fuel after your early morning HIIT class to ensure that you are ready, willing and able to bring your best selves to APIC, your clients, home life and beyond.

Kelly Castleberry, Moderator

Succession planning is the act of anticipating the future of one’s business and taking the steps necessary to ensure its long-term success, ideally years in advance of any changes that may occur. In its very essence, succession planning should be thought of as less about an advisor’s retirement and exit from the business, but rather more as a fundamental component of sound practice management. It should be embraced at every stage in the lifecycle of an advisor’s business, and it is relevant to every advisor at the Firm. This session will cover the best practices to consider for both those who are nearing retirement, as well as those looking to capitalize on the inorganic growth opportunity to acquire a book of business.

Glenn Kurlander

Nico Tavormina
To differentiate yourself as an UHNW family wealth manager and provide more impactful and effective advice to clients, it is essential to broaden the scope of qualitative wealth management advice. In this session, members of Family Office Resources will discuss how to navigate that effort successfully, both generally and specifically, as well as how FOR is able to assist in both contexts. We will use estate planning—the most frequent engagement in the FOR caseload—to illustrate the general and philosophical transition advisors must make from a focus on traditional planning—largely structural and tax driven—to a more qualitative perspective, one that recognizes that as important as  that traditional focus is, and as much as FOR does to assist you in that arena, the family’s long term happiness and success typically depends to a greater extent on other components of their planning. We will use business succession planning as our specific example, where again the traditional focus is on structural and tax-driven elements, but where the real challenge comes from managing the complex and highly qualitative mix of family issues that are central to any family transition. In both the general and specific context, we will explore the role of the UHNW family wealth manager and how FOR can help her or him deepen and enlarge already successful client relationships, most notably in a space that other advisors—attorneys and other tax advisors and financial professionals such as business valuation specialists—have left vacant, affording the wealth manager extraordinary opportunity. A Private Wealth Advisor will share his experience working with FOR and a family in the midst of transitioning a business from the founder to his five adult daughters, and how his broadened qualitative focus has enabled the family to begin to move past the obstacles that have impeded their progress in the past.
